BROOKFIELD, Wis., (February 12, 2008) — The Pilates exercise phenomenon has swept the nation in recent years, gaining endorsements from celebrities and athletes alike. In Milwaukee, Pilates is now offered at most fitness centers, however almost all of the group exercise classes are filled with women and practically void of their gender counterpart. Anne Tremel, personal training director at Highlander Elite Fitness & Racquet Club, is hoping to change those statistics with “Men on Mats,” a new Pilates class for men-only.
“All of the men in my class are ambitious people on and off the mat,” says Tremel. “It was important for me to take into account men’s lifestyles and create a class that speaks to their overall needs. ‘Men on Mats’ is group exercise in an environment that isn’t intimidating to men.”
That environment starts with no women allowed. It may be that men find it easier and feel less vulnerable learning new exercises with other men. Flexibility is an issue for men who tend to be more rigid than women. Tremel introduces Pilates fundamentals gradually, allowing everyone to increase their flexibility and build stronger core muscles. Tremel also appeals to what men want by stressing the benefits of Pilates. In sports, like golf, balls can be hit farther and straighter because Pilates not only builds strength and flexibility while developing core strength; it also improves posture and alignment, and creates stability. All of these elements not only improve a person’s golf swing, they also help reduce the risk of injury and back pain.
Work schedules are also important factors to take into account with men. “Men on Mats” meets every Friday at 6 a.m. to allow enough time to get to work and take care of any other business.
