GLENDALE, Wis., (June, 2007) – Tiger Woods does it. Annika Sorenstam swears by it. Pilates for golfers is growing in popularity and is now being offered at North Shore Elite, 5750 N. Glen Park Rd., in Glendale. The golf-specific and private clinics are designed to help local golfers gain the flexibility and strength needed to improve their game without adding bulk to their bodies. It also helps alleviate the sore backs and aching muscles frequently associated with the sport.
In addition to strength training and flexibility, Pilates offers a variety of benefits that are essential components to a golfer’s game, including the mental principles of concentration, repetition and relaxation. Jen Emold, a certified Pilates instructor at North Shore, realized just how effective the discipline could be after taking a two-year hiatus from golf, and concentrating on Pilates.
“The results I’ve seen on the golf course have been amazing,” says Emold. “My increased strength and flexibility have really improved my game overall.”
A common problem golfers experience is back pain. “By strengthening the core muscles, and increasing the stability of the hips and pelvis, you are reducing the stress that is normally put on the back,” added Emold.
Emold currently teaches six-week clinics using Elite’s in-house Pilates studio, which features some of the area’s most advanced apparatus and equipment. Sessions are available in single or group packages of up to six people and will be offered to both members and non-members. A six-week package for groups of six will cost members $120 per person, and $180 per person for non-members. For more information, golfers can contact Jen Emold at North Shore Elite at 414-351-2900.
